Supplier's GSTIN cancelled: what happens to your ITC
A cancelled supplier GSTIN puts the ITC on their bills at risk, sometimes going back months. Here's how to check a GSTIN, which invoices are safe, and what to do before you pay them again.
Check a GSTIN's status
- On the GST portal, without logging in, open Search Taxpayer → Search by GSTIN/UIN.
- Enter the supplier's GSTIN.
- Look at GSTIN / UIN Status: Active, Suspended or Cancelled. If cancelled, note the effective date of cancellation, which can be earlier than the day it was cancelled.
Do this before adding a new supplier, and every few months for regular ones. A GSTIN that was fine last year may not be today.
Which invoices still carry ITC
| Invoice dated | ITC |
|---|---|
| Before the effective date of cancellation | Allowed, as usual, if it appears in your GSTR-2B and you meet the other conditions, such as paying within 180 days. |
| On or after the effective date | Not allowed. The supplier wasn't registered, so the invoice isn't a valid tax invoice. |
| Before the effective date, but not in your GSTR-2B | Not allowed until it appears. A supplier heading for cancellation often stops filing, so these may never appear. |
The danger is a backdated cancellation. If a GSTIN is cancelled in September with effect from April, bills from April to September can lose their credit, and the ITC you already claimed on them may need to be reversed.
What to do
- Hold the GST part of any payment until the status is clear. Paying GST to a supplier who can't deposit it is money you can't claim back.
- Stop buying with GST from that GSTIN. If they keep trading, they can't legally charge you GST.
- Find the bills at risk: everything dated on or after the effective date, and anything not yet in your GSTR-2B.
- Reverse ITC you shouldn't have, with your CA, before a notice arrives.
- Ask the supplier why it was cancelled and whether they're applying to have it revoked. If the registration is restored, the position can change.
- Keep the proof that the purchase was real: tax invoice, e-way bill, delivery record, and payment through the bank. You'll need it if the department asks.
Warning signs before cancellation
- The supplier's invoices stop showing up in your GSTR-2B.
- The GSTIN status shows Suspended.
- Several suppliers share the same address or bank account.
- A new supplier offers unusually low prices and insists on quick payment.

Questions
Can I claim ITC on an invoice dated after the supplier's GSTIN was cancelled?
No. After the cancellation date the supplier isn't registered, so they can't issue a tax invoice or charge GST, and there's no ITC to claim. Don't pay them the GST portion.
What if the cancellation is backdated?
A cancellation can take effect from an earlier date. Invoices dated after that effective date can then lose their ITC, even if you claimed it months ago. Check the effective date on the GST portal, not just the status.
What does a suspended GSTIN mean?
The registration is under cancellation proceedings. While it's suspended, the supplier shouldn't make taxable supplies, so treat their new invoices with care until the status is settled.
